Eric Schwartz graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S.E. (summa cum laude) and M.B.A. in 1984 and 1985, respectively. He joined Goldman Sachs on a full-time basis in 1985 after a summer there in 1984. In 1994, he became a partner in the Equity Capital Markets unit of what is now the Investment Banking Division. In 1998, he became Head of Global Equity Derivatives and Prime Brokerage and ultimately became Co-Head of Global Equities in 2001, at which time he also joined the Management Committee of the firm. In 2003, he became the Co-Head of the Investment Management Division, which includes Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM). In 2005, Schwartz became Co-Head of the firm’s Partnership Committee. At the time of his retirement in June 2007, GSAM had over $1 trillion in assets under supervision and over $750 billion in assets under management. In the Fall of 2007 he founded a private company to manage his personal investments, with a focus on private equity investing in the financial services industry. He served as Chairman-elect of Nikko Asset Management, the third-largest asset manager in Japan, from 2008 until its sale in 2009.
On a personal level, Schwartz has been married for 23 years, has two teenage children, and lives in New York City. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the New York Public Library and as Chairman of Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE), an independent advocacy group dedicated to the development and implementation of a comprehensive energy security policy by the United States. Schwartz is also a co-owner of The New Republic, a journal of politics and policy based in Washington, DC.
