At the start of a new decade, The Hamilton Project examines trends in income and employment during the previous decade. From 2000-2010, the United States suffered two recessions — the recession of March 2001 to November 2001 and the Great Recession of December 2007 to June 2009. While income per capita rose from 2003-2008, the Great Recession reversed those gains. Few Americans today are better off than they were at the turn of the Millennium. In entering the new decade, America faces daunting economic challenges, including federal, state and local budget deficits; slow economic growth; and a large “job gap.”
