Employment Growth by Skill Level, 1979-2007
April 30, 2010
Over the past 30 years, employment has increased in low-skill and high-skill occupations while stagnating or decreasing in middle-skill occupations. Here, each line shows the change in employment share by skill level for 1979-1989, 1989-1999, and 1999-2007, respectively. Between 1979 and 1989, employment increased for higher-skilled jobs. Between 1989 and 1999, employment increased among very low-skill jobs and high-skill jobs. Finally, between 1999 and 2007, employment increased among mainly low-skill jobs. Combined, this illustrates how job opportunities have polarized since 1979, with most of the job growth occurring for high-skill and low-skill jobs and little job growth in middle-skill jobs.
