Federal Debt as a Percentage of GDP
April 20, 2010
This graph shows the federal debt as a percentage of GDP from 1940 to the present, with the series extended through 2030 using CBO projections from both 2007 and 2009. The 2007 figure shows that even prior to the Great Recession, the United States was on a path to debt to GDP ratio not seen since World War II. However, the Great Recession has worsened the fiscal situation, lessening the amount of time to respond.
