Income and Employment, 2000-2010
January 7, 2011
From 2003-2008, income per capita (excluding transfer payments like Social Security and unemployment benefits) rose over $3,000 per person. These gains, however, were undone by the Great Recession, indicated by the shaded area on the right. While we experienced some income gains in the mid-2000s, those gains were not accompanied by a large increase in the employment to population ratio — the broadest measure of unemployment. (Source: BEA, BLS, NBER. Note: Personal Income is in chained 2005 dollars, seasonally adjusted, and excludes transfers. Shading indicates recessions.)
