Median Annual Earnings Since 1964
March 4, 2011
There has been a sharp decline in employment rates for men over the last several decades — particularly lower-skill men with less than a college degree. Today, only 66 percent of prime-age men hold full-time jobs, down from 80 percent in 1970. This analysis suggests that earnings have not merely stagnated, but have declined sharply. The median wage of the American male has declined by almost $13,000 after accounting for inflation in the four decades since 1969, a reduction of 28 percent. (Source: Sample includes men ages 25-64. Earnings data come from the Current Population Survey, 1964-2009. Data on the institutionalized population come from the US Census 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000 and the American Community Survey 2006-2009.)
