U.S. Income Inequality: Median and 95th Percentile Household Income, 1975-2008

Between 1975 and 2008, the median American household saw an increase of only 17 percent in income, while households in the 95th percentile saw a rise of 54 percent in income. In this graph, median household income is compared to income of households at the 95th percentile from 1975 to 2008. During this time period, households in the 95th percentile saw a 54 percent rise in income, while median household income increased a relatively modest 17 percent.
