John N. Friedman

John N. Friedman is an associate professor of economics and international affairs and public policy at Brown University. His research aims to produce rigorous empirical evidence that is tied to theoretical models to inform public policy decisions. Most recently his work has focused on the long-run effects of education and the economics of taxation, although he has also written papers on gerrymandering and health economics. His work has appeared in both top academic journals and in media outlets such as The New York Times, and it has featured in policy debates including President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union address. Before joining Brown University, Friedman served as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy within the National Economic Council (NEC) in the White House. He also taught public policy and economics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, and was a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar of Health Policy at the University of California at Berkeley. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He holds a PhD in Economics, an AM in Statistics, and a BA in Economics, all from Harvard University.
