He questions why gun enthusiasts would oppose proposals by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others for initiatives such as requiring background checks for firearm buyers and strengthening mental health checks. McKinnon writes that the GOP is looking backwards on issues such as immigration, gay rights and guns, and suggests that the party could be on a “path toward irrelevance” if it fails to release a plan in response to the Newtown shooting and other recent massacres.
