About Economic Studies: The Economic Studies program analyzes current and emerging economic issues facing the United States and the world and, based on that research, provides innovative, practical policy recommendations. ES’s work covers a broad array of economic issues, including the labor market, regulation, health policy, the environment, and fiscal and monetary policy. Economic Studies scholars influence key economic policies by conducting rigorous and relevant research and then disseminating and communicating their findings to the policy community and to the broader public.
About the Hamilton Project: The Hamilton Project (THP) at the Brookings Institution produces research and policy proposals on how to create a growing economy that benefits more Americans. Our economic strategy reflects a judgment that long term prosperity is best achieved by making economic growth broad-based, by enhancing individual economic security, and by embracing a role for effective government in making needed public investments. The Project focuses on a broad range of topics in applied microeconomics with applications to economy policy. Current and recent projects include papers on how the pandemic and recession will affect the economy in future years, reforming federal support for higher education, reducing crime and incarceration rates, reforms that would increase productivity growth, the wealth gap between Black and white households, policies to strengthen the labor market and enhance wage growth, and policies to support communities’ economic development. Position Location: This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC, office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week.
Vaccine Policy: Brookings requires all staff and visitors to submit proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 to be in Brookings buildings.

Responsibilities
The Fellow in the Hamilton Project in Economic Studies undertakes independent and joint research assignments and publishes through the Hamilton Project at Brookings on topics related to its mission of producing evidence-based policies to promote broad-based economic growth. In addition to independent research, the fellow seeks opportunities to collaborate with other scholars in ES and across the Institution, and mentors junior staff. The Hamilton Fellow engages in public and private events, policy dialogue with policymakers, the public, and the media, and contributes to the intellectual life of The Hamilton Project and The Brookings Institution.
Research and Policy Development
- Engages in advanced study and research on a broad range of topics related to The Hamilton Project’s mission, independently and in collaboration with Hamilton Project scholars, staff, and grantees.
- Manages paper production processes for designated Hamilton Project products, including the supervision of tasked staff and the completion of deliverables.
- Disseminates research findings through the publication of independent or co-authored pieces in various outlets such as academic journals, newspapers, and as Hamilton Project research products.
- Works with Hamilton Project staff to plan and convene public and private events and develop and implement plans for disseminating work. Participates and presents own research in relevant conferences, seminars, and meetings.
- Participates in general Brookings events, particularly those that pertain to the activities and development of the Economics Studies program.

Education/Experience Requirements:
Ph.D. in Economics or related social science field with a minimum of four years of relevant post-doctorate work experience required, including practical experience with current economic and public policy issues. Candidates should have strong record of productivity with the clear potential to be recognized as a leader in their field. Proven competence to undertake research assignments with little or no supervision and in supervising and developing pre-doctoral research staff. Proven record of distinguished work, a record of publication in professional and academic journals or books, and the popular media. Deep understanding of economic policy issues facing the United States and the world.
Knowledge/Skills Requirements:
Must be able to competently lead issue-focused meetings, initiatives, high-level conferences, and other events without supervision. Demonstrated interest in public policy and strong potential for policy impact. Strong written, research, and oral communications skills required. Knowledge of STATA, R, or other widely used computer software programs required. Must be able to present research work in a cogent style consistent with standards for Brookings and the field. Ability to meet rapid, multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Initiative, discretion, and mature judgment required. Must be comfortable working with high-ranking decision makers, senior government officials, and Brookings senior management. Commitment to contributing to a supportive and productive workplace with a diverse workforce. Ability to work collegially with staff at all levels and in all job profiles. Interest in or experience with mentoring junior staff preferred.
