Income Per Capita in Hardest-Hit Counties During the 1980-1982 Recessions
October 13, 2010
Prior to the 1980-1982 recessions, the two groups of counties followed a similar trajectory. Afterwards, the hardest-hit counties not only failed to catch up to the rest of the nation, they actually grew slower, lagging even further behind. By 2007, there was a gap of almost $10,000 in per-capita income between the hardest-hit counties and the rest of the nation. (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis, Table CA04. Income per capita includes total income excluding transfers. The 1989-81 and 1981-82 recessions are grouped together.)
